Why I studied what I studied

Hey there! If you made it to this page you’re probably interested in learning more about me and I really appreciate that, thanks!

My name is Vivian and I just graduated May 2022 from Brown University. The funny thing is, I only went to Brown for 3 years (not 4). Why? Because I transferred to Brown from Boston College in my sophomore year. Even though I no longer attend that school, it’s still my first home away from home. Since Boston College’s mascot is an eagle and Brown’s mascot is a bear, I call myself a beagle! (yes, I make bad puns).

I graduated as a computer science and psychology double major with a minor in Education. You might be wondering why I chose this strange combination. Truth is, I was a very avid Education major until my junior year. Inspired by the tutoring job that I still do, I wanted to be a teacher to explore my curiosity for cognitive psychology while simultaneously contributing meaningfully to my community. However, I realized that I wanted to expand my influence beyond the classroom and into the future of educational technology. Hence, I picked up computer science to acquire a better understanding of human-computer interaction. I’m particularly interested in how gaming can be used as an engaging way for younger students to learn not only standard school subjects but also acquire applicable life skills and critical thinking. Right now, I’m building up my skills so that someday, I can help make educational equity a reality.

Hobbies!!!

Language learning!

Fun fact: I can speak 5 languages. In order of proficiency: English (Native speaker), Chinese (Native speaker), Spanish (Professional proficiency), Japanese (conversational), Korean (conversational). I’m currently tutoring Spanish to middle school and high school students —it’s been a great way to maintain my own Spanish!— and learning Japanese (just passed the N2 exam in Dec 2024!) and Korean with my own private tutors. I’m also TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certified :)

Fencing!

I was on the Brown University D1 Fencing Team! I’ve been fencing since middle school and I love how both strategy and physical capability are equally important in this sport.

Dancing!

I am on the Executive Board for the Brown-RISD Kpop Dance Club. Although COVID-19 has made it extremely difficult to keep the dance community together, the video on the right is the product of our efforts to show that dancing together is still possible even in quarantine!

I was also on the BC AEROdynamiK dance crew while I attended Boston College my freshman year!
